Menu planning for frantic moms

I don’t know many moms who aren’t frantic. With carpooling, sporting events, and the busyness of daily life home cooked meals are growing extinct.
When I was first married I vowed to never cook from a box. Four kids later and 99.9% of my family’s meals come from a box, bag, or drive-thru. Many times I have wished for someone to do my menu planning and grocery list for meals that my picky kids will eat.
Mary Jo Rulnick has come to my rescue with her new book The frantic Woman’s Guide to Feeding Family and Friends Just what I need to get me organized and on track with feeding my family better. The shopping lists and recipes in the book really are a no-brainer. The recipes are easy and kid friendly. They are broken down into seasonal menus, weekly and daily specials, and side dishes. Grocery lists for every dinner are included along with dinner recipes for the entire year.
I rarely cook from a cookbook since I lack the time and often the recipe ingredients can cost as much as eating out. Finding dinner recipes that my picky kids will eat has also been a challenge. The frantic Woman’s Guide to Feeding Family and Friends has become my recipe bible. Many of the recipes include ingredients that can be used in other recipes during the two week menu plan. My only complaint is that there aren’t photos for the recipes. I like to see what the finished product looks like since I can tell if my kids will eat it just by how it looks.
Mary Jo Rulnick also includes tips on how to organize your kitchen, recipe cheat sheet, and a food stain removal guide. I really like the tips and family activities sprinkled throughout the book. She gives book suggestions and I’ve learned some useful tips such as placing frozen fish in milk for a quick thaw since taking fish out of the freezer the day before is something I often forget to do.
You can’t go wrong with this book. Even if you don’t plan on following the 14-day menu plans you will have plenty of recipes to choose from on any given night. There is even holiday menu plans that also give you ideas for what to do with the left over ham or turkey. This is a must-have book for families with picky eaters. ~Kristie
