Cole Family Christmas
The Cole Family Christmas is a heart warming story about the nine children of the Cole family and explores the true meaning of Christmas as it follows the worries, fears, joy and love of a coal miner’s family during the holiday.
The story takes place in the small company town of Benham, Kentucky, in a time (1920) and place when coal was king and families made their precarious living mining the dirty and sometimes deadly coal.
The Cole children were given the rare chance to choose their Christmas presents from the Sears catalogue wish book. What they ended up getting was better than anything in the Sears catalogue.
The Cole Family Christmas is based on a real family, the youngest of nine children in the story, Hazel, is the 88-year-old co-author of the book.
My kids love this book and I love how it reinforces the real meaning of Christmas. They loved learning about what life was like for the Cole family and Hilda the goat was their favorite character. She must be popular with most kids (pun intended) because Hilda was brought to life this year in a live, interactive traveling animated show. Hilda is also the spokesgoat for ReadAloud.org.
