Interactive DVD Uses Fairytales to Teach Reading Skills

PBS Kids released on DVD today (July 18) a superhero series that is designed to help children ages 3-6 learn to read through interactive storybook adventures.

Super Why!: Jack and the Beanstalk & Other Fairtale Adventures  has received the Parents’ Choice Silver Honor Award and National Parenting Center Seal of Approval and was nominated for an Emmy® for Outstanding Preschool Children’s Series.  Each episode begins behind the bookshelves of a library where four fairytale friends overcome a dilemma by looking in a book.  The friends turn into a team of literacy-powered super heroes to solve the problem and save the day while teaching children core reading fundamentals.

I watched the DVD with my 21-month-old and here are my thoughts.

Pros:

  • It has great interactive presentations for spelling skills and I think would be helpful for kids that are age-appropriate. Characters also pose questions to the viewers, similar to Blues Clues, which seemd to engage my toddler.
  • I liked the use of the “super computer” to introduce technology into the stories.
  • The DVD incorporates four classic fairy tales (Jack and the Beanstalk, The Princess an the Pea, The Three Little Pigs and Little Red Riding Hood) with modern twists to engage children in helping to find the answers to everyday preschool challenges.

Cons:

  • The “Ask Why” promo at the beninng is too long.
  • The DVD was too advanced for my 21-month-0ld, but it really is designed for preschoolers versus toddlers.

The DVD also includes Interactive Games, Music Videos and Coloring Pages and is available for a suggested retail price of $14.99.
