I'm Michelle Cox -- the owner of Lipstick to Crayons. I’m also a Mom to three kids (a teen, tween and toddler), a professional writer (www.michellemcox.com) and a blogger (www.fromthemom.com). And I love to save money (and help you do the same) via frugal deals and steals, coupons and other thrifty practices. My freelance writing business allows me to enjoy the great balance of being a stay-at-home/work-at-home mom, while also making time for blogging, running (ran the Chicago Marathon twice) some amateur photography and scrapbooking. I’m a St. Louis native, although I have lived outside of the city and the state. A few of my passions are amateur photography, scrapbooking and attending kids' sporting events.

New Chicken Soup for the Soul Book Giveaway

The latest Chicken Soup for the soul book – Tough Times, Tough People — provides a kind of emotional stimulus package. The book is all about overcoming adversity, pulling together, making do with less, facing challenges and finding new joys in a simpler life.

The stories in this book remind us that we are all going through tough times, but we are tough people and we will survive.

Chicken Soup for the Soul: Tough Times, Tough People presents tales of people who have been laid off, lost their homes, and endured wrenching life changes, but discovered the underlying gifts in their new situations.  More time at home with family, creative “staycations,” more satisfying job opportunities, and renewed gratitude for health and life are just a few of the silver linings these survivors cherish.

I thought some of the book’s stories would be good for my teen to read, as well, so I shared the book with her. She isn’t finished with it just yet, but I’ve caught her reading it a number of times. She said, “It’s a very eye-opening book. The stories are about families who are struggling in this recession but somehow still find a way to pull through together. Instead of freaking out when they can’t afford something, these people are figuring out how to enjoy life with fewer resources.” What teen couldn’t benefit from that life lesson, eh?

In this book, you’ll read about:

  • Candace Simar, who after a painful job layoff finally had time to pursue her passion: writing
  • Kristen Eberhard, now a single mom and “profoundly grateful,” whose Wall Street husband went to jail, forcing mother and child into a spare room at her parents’ house
  • “Ziggy,” a widowed retiree who devoted his golden years to buying groceries for strangers in need
  • Eva Schlesinger, a burn survivor who had to learn to walk again – and today, is a long-distance cyclist

The book retails for $14.95, but I’ve got three to give away. You know the drill.
