What Are You Running From?
My favorite form of exercise is running. Okay, pretty much my ONLY form of exercise is running. I’ve attempted to incorporate other activities from time to time, which I wrote about here. And I failed miserably. I just don’t enjoy anything else, really.
I’ve tried to get my husband to run with me. He did run with me regularly when we were engaged to be married, but he hated it. He has often said that if you ever see him running, call the police because someone must be chasing him. He used to jokingly ask me what I was running from? My response: “A large rear end.”
In reality, the better question would be “What are you running toward?” And my answer would be: “I’m running toward a better state of mind. I’m running toward my happy place. I’m running toward being a kinder, gentler mom.”
I’ve done the Chicago Marathon twice and the St. Louis Half Marathon three times, so I often get questions about my running from people who are trying to develop a regular exercise routine or who want to train for a running event. My best advice is to make your exercise your drug of choice. Consider it your vice and allow yourself to indulge in your vice everyday (or at least several times a week). It’s a mental game. I consider my exercise time a privilege. Plus, my family knows that if I don’t get to do it, I’m likely to be crabby. I just received a shirt from Banana Blossom Press with this logo on it: No Run = Cranky+Moody. My daughter asked me if I made the shirt myself, not because it looks like homemade job, but because it is so perfect for me!
If you’re a runner or jogger (I’m not sure exactly where the line is between the two), tell me how you keep motivated and how you manage to stave off injuries. In the coming weeks, I hope to have a giveaway or two that would be of interest to those who regularly pound the pavement.
