Halloween Reading Treats
I recently received a few Halloween books from Candlewick Press that have us in the spirit for the Halloween holiday. My toddler’s favorites among the books are Trick or Treat by Melanie Walsh and Tucker’s Spooky Halloweenby Leslie McGuirk.
Tucker’s Spooky Halloween is probably my toddler’s new favorite. It’s a
story about a dog, Tucker, who is determined to look scary this year instead of cute. So, he goes about trying to find just the right costume. This book also is part of the Candlewick Storybook Animation packs, which includes a full-color hardcover picture book, a DVD/CD with a full animated story and two audio read-along versions of the text, one with page-turn prompts and a full-color poster and a sheet of reusable stickers.
Trick or Treat is a board book with flaps and my toddler had the book memorized within a few days. It’s a perfect board book full of bright colors, bold illustrations and “not so spooky” surprises waiting beneath the sturdy flaps that she has not managed to tear. It is recommended for ages 3-5, but my girl is not quite 2 and she’s a big fan.
Other fun titles that will entertain some slightly older readers are:
The Bag of Bones, ages 8 and up. This is the second tale from the Five Kingdoms by Vivian French. When the quill write “Go Go Go” frantically on the wall, it can mean only one thing: there’s trouble in the Five Kingdoms and this time it’s in the form of a witch named Truda Hangnail.
Where’s My Mummyby Carolyn Crimi, ages 4 – 7. Little Baby Mummy wants just one more game of hide-and-shriek with Big Mama Mummy before bedtime.
And Then Come Halloween by Tom Brenner, ages 4 – 7. As soon as geese fly south, children take autumn’s cue to start their preparations because it’s almost Halloween. The book has poetic language by Brenner and vivid illustrations by Holly Meade.
