$100 Gift Card Giveaway to Help You Make Changes
I’m one of those people who refers to paper towels as Scott towels. I honestly thought that’s what they were called until I got to Journalism School at Mizzou and learned via lost points on an editing class quiz that Scott is a name brand and is only one of many paper towel brands. That shows you how prevalent this particular brand was in my childhood home.
These days, however, Scott is hoping to make your life easier with more than just paper towels. In fact, the company has launched a Web site called Scott Common Sense Community that offers tips and information on lots of topics including cooking, organizing, cleaning, saving money, etc. Each month, the site has a focused theme, and this month that theme is “Change for the Better.” So, Scott is offering one my readers a $100 gift card to spend on ANYTHING to help implement changes she (or he) might be trying to make.
I played around on the Scott Common Sense Community for a little while before writing this post and I have to say that I think they’ve got the right idea. A lot of companies are trying to build Web sites that engage their customers in an effort to build relationships and brand loyalty. It’s a great idea and one that can really work if a company is willing to spend the time (and resources) to provide value-added content. Scott seems to be doing just that. Check out the articles and tips on organization, for example. There are some great tips here.
So, here’s how you can use the site and enter this contest:

As a gardener I liked this common sense tip Article
Everyday Sense – Hobbies & Interests
3.00 / 2 votes Small Plant ProtectionWhen transplanting small vegetable plants into the garden, I cut up my SCOTT® paper towel and toilet paper end rolls into 2 to 3 inch pieces, slip them over the plants and give a little twist into the ground. This will help defeat the cutworm and other base destroying insects. It also gives a visual marker as to where the plants are. As the plants get too big for the cutworm to chop them in half, the cardboard will recycle itself into the soil.

“Have duplicates where you need them most.
For maximum organization and efficiency, keep basic cleaning supplies in all your bathrooms and under the kitchen sink.”

It would go straight to credit card debt for sure.
I like these two ideas:
# Make more than the minimum payment. Not only does it help your credit, it makes good financial sense. By paying the minimum only, you are compounding the interest you’ll pay and extending the time it will take to pay off even a modest balance.
# Create a budget and stick to it. Begin by tracking your income and expenses on a Cash Flow Worksheet. From there, see where you can cut expenses or increase income to lessen your reliance on credit.

I like the article about conquering holiday clutter. We’ll be conquering all of our clutter this month as we pack to move into our hew house. I would spend the $100 on items that will help us stay “uncluttered” once we settle into our new home.
Thanks for the chance to win!

I like the tip that says daily aerobic exercise can help you relax and reduce blood pressure and cholesterol. I never realized exercise could have these benefits.
To improve my life, if I win the $100, I’m going to buy myself some workout clothing. I recently got back on my weight loss plan, and now that it’s winter, I need warmer stuff! Plus, new workout clothes makes me excited and eager to exercise!

I liked two of the tips in Committed to Memeory
Know your learning style. If you learn by hearing, repeat the information out loud. If you learn by reading or writing, put it in writing and read it a few times.
Use frequent reminders. Frequent exposure to information helps it work its way into your long-term memory. Don’t expect to remember a lot of detail after one exposure to a new concept.

I agree with you – great tips! I got sucked in and read quite a few of the articles. I like many of the ideas and I will definitely go back.
“what tip or idea you liked the best and how you might use the $100 gift card to make a change in something in your life”?
Fave tip: I liked the tip about practicing deep breathing (“enhances your health by fully oxygenating your cells and releasing natural pain-killing endorphins into your system.”) I have a tendency to hold my breath when I get anxious and it only increases stress.
Use of the gift card: There were several things in the Little Changes, Big Results article that I would love to implement with my $100 gift card. Drink water – I would love a water filter for great tasting water. Have nuts – I want to get a new glass canister set and include nuts as one of the items so they’ll be visible and handy. Multi-vitamin – I don’t have money in my budget for vitamins right now and gift card would definitely help. If there’s anything left, taking a friend out to breakfast to “make social connections.”
Thanks for telling me about this site, and a great giveaway!

I learned that incorporating frequent bursts of activity in your day can have the same cardio benefits as 30 solid minutes of exercise, so taking the stairs and parking further away from your destination in order to brisk walk, really do pay off.

I read the article on Memory. The tip I liked best was to get plenty of sleep, which I definately agree with, I am much more forgetful when I am tired.

I’ve used Scott products for years. I especially like the paper towels and one tip they give is if they get washed in the washing machine, they will come out in one piece. This is true. Sometimes we forget to take tissues out of pockets before washing clothes and have paper all in the washing machine. The Scott paper towel will not do this, it comes out in one piece every time.

Special Occasion Cleaning
Holiday Linens. If your towels, napkins and tablecloths have been sitting in the basement or attic, they’ll probably have a musty smell. Check them for stains too, which can set in throughout the year. A short wash cycle should get them ready.
after washing stick them in a space bag, and theyll stay fresh…

This is a cool tip:
When transplanting small vegetable plants into the garden, I cut up my SCOTT® paper towel and toilet paper end rolls into 2 to 3 inch pieces, slip them over the plants and give a little twist into the ground. This will help defeat the cutworm and other base destroying insects. It also gives a visual marker as to where the plants are. As the plants get too big for the cutworm to chop them in half, the cardboard will recycle itself into the soil.

I like the article “Neatness may be its own reward, but the benefits don’t stop there.”
Especially the tip: “Conquer clutter five minutes at a time. Block out the time, make a date with yourself and stick with it.
Once you start, you’ll be surprised at how much you accomplish in just five minutes. And how quickly those brief sessions cut down the clutter. Some nights you may get into a groove and your five minutes will stretch to a half-hour or more. The key is consistency. Those mountains of clutter will soon become molehills.”
I think what keeps me from decluttering is trying to get myself to do it all at once. If I do just a little bit at a time, it’s more motivating for me.

Make your afternoon or evening snack a piece of fruit – preferably berries or grapes. I would use the card to buy more fruits and vegetables so I could eat healthier.

I like the tip Special Occasion Cleaning: If your towels, napkins and tablecloths have been sitting in the basement or attic, they’ll probably have a musty smell. Check them for stains too, which can set in throughout the year. A short wash cycle should get them ready.
I’d use the $100 Gift to buy lots of cleaning supplies, toilet paper, paper towels, and laundry soap.

i like the tip to use fabric remnants to make your own napkins.
I’d love to have a set of everyday napkins to make dinner time a bit more special.

I like the article on organizing my life which I really need! I would use the gift card to have a family night out, dinner and a movie!

I would use it to be able to give good gifts for once
I looked at the “The End of Kitchen Gridlock” article I like this tip:
The day before: Chop veggies for salads or veggie platters, prepare stuffing, defrost desserts, appetizers and side dishes.

I like this coffee tip:
When preparing your coffee process, if you put a dash of salt into the fresh grounds, your fresh brewed coffee will be less bitter…or you may use a fresh egg shell…you will get the same effect.
I would use the gift card to start buying healthier foods for my family.

I like this tip: Save your SCOTT toilet paper rolls & SCOTT paper towel rolls when empty & use them to put your extension cords in. This keeps them neat & untangled.
I would use the gift certificate to purchase organizational items.

Why do we have to be reminded to “Count our Blessings”? I most certainly do. So many of my hours are spent trying to do things to get ahead and I don’t often enough exhale, take a look around me and be thankful for all of the love, support, and beauty that surrounds me.
#639 Grant on November 2, 2009:
I would use the $100 to buy basic household supplies

I liked the tip that said, “•On laundry day, when closets and drawers are relatively empty. Have the family pull out what hasn’t been worn in a year or more.” I would use the $100 to buy storage containers ans trash bags.

The 8 Steps to Healthy credit. I can use some good suggestions, and how to have great credit for those major purchases that we need loans for. I always want to look up my credit report and somehow never get around to it.

I liked Overcoming Your Time Wasters. I never seem to have enough hours for everything. I want to work on managing my time better.

I learned this tip which will come in very handy because there are always ant mounds popping up in my yard & it’s such a battle!
Get Rid of Ants Put small piles of cornmeal where you see ants. They eat it, take it ‘home,’ can’tdigest it so it kills them. It may take a week or so, especially if it rains, but it works and you don’t have the worry about pets or small children being harmed!
#644 Marcy Strahan on November 2, 2009:
I would use this to buy product to clean my home really well, bug spray, caulking for weather stripping & a tower heater fan.
I would like to have a cleaner & safer bug free home.
You should see the Texas Cockroaches that come in our bathroon air vents……they are so big ..ugh!
I would love a heater fan/space heater in order to be warm in what ever room we are in & run the heater less to save energy & cut down on our electric bills.
Basically, things to improve & make my home more healthier for my family!

Forgive yourself. Don’t let one slip up give you permission to blow the rest of the holidays. Each day is a new opportunity to practice moderation. I plan to use the $100 to buy a new swimsuit & goggles so I can swim more often. Thanks for the contest.

I like the list making article. This was a great thought: Always remember to concentrate on what you’ve done instead of what’s left to do on the list.
#651 Heather C on November 2, 2009:
Dang, I forgot to tell you what I’d spend the money on! Well, I would buy some organizational tools, such as accordion folders and labels, so I can get this house into shape!
Also, I stumbled – choochoo428

I loved the ten-minute Halloween costumes. This came in very handy for a costume for my grandson. Money has been tight and using what is already around helps a lot.
I would use the $100 to stock up on staples we use all the time. Paper towels, toilet paper, and cleaning supplies among other things.
