Use dominant art to set the tone
At The Design File, we spend quite a bit of time talking about art, which can really turn your home into a unique space that reflects your personality.
Personally, I love a room with dominant art. A large piece just commands that you take a long look and sets the tone for a room. It can also provide a unique look to an otherwise small, lackluster space.
Take a look at the two examples at right, which are both from a Beazer Homes townhouse in the Village of West Clay in Carmel, Ind.
At left is the home’s small, bottom floor powder room. It has an interesting, textural wallpaper. But it’s the vibrant painting that really grabs and keeps your attention.
In the two-story entry way of the same home are these cool and very large typographical paintings, which set the modern and colorful tone for the art-filled home.
Both these examples show that a dominant piece of art needs to be large but it doesn’t have to be overpoweringly so.
Check out the photo below in a condo decorated by Design Star contestant Lonni Paul. The art here is large enough to carry the wall but it becomes the focal point of the room largely because of its striking colors and evocative feel.
In the photo below, however, size does matter. The three-piece print in the dining room of HGTV’s Green Home 2009 is neutral and simple. But it’s commanding nonetheless because of its size and placement on a wall that is barely wider than the combined frames.
Check out some of these other great examples of dominant art:
The photo below also comes from a home in the Village of West Clay, this one built by Woodall Construction Services and furnished by designer Linda Morgan. The art here is a key part of a collection that provides the focal point for this gorgeous entry hall. Without the art, the buffet would be just another table. With it, this small wall becomes a striking introduction to the high-end home.
At The Design File, We featured this Indianapolis home just last week, but I wanted to include this photo of the dining area to show how this large painting really brings this part of the home together and helps define the space.
Finally, this girl’s room is from another Indianapolis home we toured earlier this year. I’m not sure whether it was done by an artist or was a fantastic DIY project, but it’s an effective focal point for this cute room.
