Fashion Purge – Update to Fashionable Mom 2.0
It’s official. I’m not a 20-something – or even a 30-something — anymore.
I mean – it was official according to the calendar a long time ago. After all, I’ve already celebrated my 40th birthday. But now it’s official according to my closet.
I moved my spring/summer clothes to the basement last weekend, and I moved my fall/winter clothes upstairs. I decided that if I hadn’t worn a particular article of clothing in the past 12-24 months, I’d donate it to Goodwill. And whaddayaknow — at the end of the “purge,” everything I decided to donate was chosen not because I don’t like it anymore, and not because it’s out of style (although some of those items ARE unfashionable). And thankfully, through considerable effort and Weight Watchers, not because they don’t fit. They were chosen because I’m too old mature and classy to be wearing said items.
Here’s what my purge revealed to me:
- I’ve reached the point where exposing my mid-drift – even “accidentally” – isn’t cool. So sweaters and tops that are too short went into the pile.
- I’ve reached the point where ALL of my shorter skirts need to come closer to my knee. I’m not ready for “at” the knee. It’s either just above, or definitely below the knee for me. But mid-thigh doesn’t work anymore.
- Ditto for dresses.
- I WILL NOT expose my rear end because my jeans are cut too low. However, I didn’t feel the need to discard any of my jeans thanks to the fashionable longer tops and tunics that are donning the mannequins of some of my favorite shopping locales. I have purchased a few of these tops and have paired them with these lower cut jeans. Thus, the only person aware of my exposure is ME.
- I’m comfortable with panty lines and NOT comfortable IN thongs. If this is a sign of age, so be it.
Things I’ve added to my wardrobe:
- Not one, but TWO Spanx.
- Some comfortable shoes.
Fashion is very important to me. But I think part of being fashionable is knowing where in the fashion spectrum you land based on your body type, age and lifestyle. So, I don’t consider my purge a surrender, but rather an update to Fashionable Mom 2.0.
Note to my Mom – sorry, but I still refuse to wear pantyhose AND slips. You know why I hate pantyhose, and if an item isn’t lined and needs a slip, I won’t buy it.

Welcome back!

Ditto on everything, including the pantyhose. Do they even still make slips anymore? Ick!

That’s a shame. All women should wear pantyhose. They are so sexy. Bare legs just don’t look right. If your wearing a skirt or dress without nylons, It kind of ruins the outfit.
#3 Donna From Philly on November 5, 2009:
I wear Pantyhose every day. They make my legs fell and look so much better, I don’t have any issues they comfort and ease pf putting them on. As long as you get the correct size, and with all the new fabricks it’s no longer an issues like the 70’s. But even then I wore Pantyhose everyday.

I agree… pantyhose are the devil!

OH yes I enjoyed this earlier this week. I printed it and I’m saving it forever. Just be careful or I will tell everyone “why you don’t like to wear nylons”, You are a real hoot, always have been and I love every minute of it. Keep up the good work on all your very informative articles. I love reading them and get lots of great information from them. Wish I had loads of money to spend because you have told me about so many great places to buy wonderful products. Now if someone could just invent “pantyhose” for women like you and slips also. Love, Me
