I'm Michelle Cox -- the owner of Lipstick to Crayons. I’m also a Mom to three kids (a teen, tween and toddler), a professional writer (www.michellemcox.com) and a blogger (www.fromthemom.com). And I love to save money (and help you do the same) via frugal deals and steals, coupons and other thrifty practices. My freelance writing business allows me to enjoy the great balance of being a stay-at-home/work-at-home mom, while also making time for blogging, running (ran the Chicago Marathon twice) some amateur photography and scrapbooking. I’m a St. Louis native, although I have lived outside of the city and the state. A few of my passions are amateur photography, scrapbooking and attending kids' sporting events.

Home Safety for the Holidays

As we head into the holiday home stretch, be sure to check out Underwriters Laboratories’ newly-redesigned Safety At Home Web site, safetyathome.com, which offers several tips to help you have a safe and bright holiday season. The site also provides a series of articles to help you and your family stay safe throughout the year, including general home safety tips, safety for college students, a safety checklist for older adults, and much more.

safetyUL is a safety certification company that has been testing, verifying and inspecting products for over 115 years. Today, the UL Mark can be found on all kinds of everyday products to certify that they have been tested, inspected and verified for safety. In fact, the average home has more than 128 products with the UL Mark on them, and even more during the holiday season.

Safetyathome.com was recently redesigned to be more interactive. You can watch safety videos on YouTube, share thoughts with UL on Twitter, view photos on Flickr and even weigh in on blog posts within their community.

The “Green Answers” articles found in the Environmental Safety section of safetyathome.com provide insights on common questions – everything from BPA to lead-based paints, as well as how UL goes about validating the many “green” claims out there.

So, enjoy your holidays safely, and start the new year off right by reading up on ways to make your home safer for your family.
