Geometric patterns add fun & interest to rooms

When strong geometric patterns started showing up in designer rooms a few years ago, I thought it might be just a fad, part of the mid-century comeback that has influenced contemporary design.

Jaymes Richardson on hgtvBut I think they might be with us to stay. I’m so pleased. The strong patterns in rugs, pillows and furnishings provide a great way to bring interest into rooms.

Designer Jaymes Richardson created the room at right, which was featured on HGTV.

Jaymes said on HGTV.com that the colorful space allows the furnishings to float in the room, yet they “remain anchored in their placement with a bold, geometric area rug.” It’s beautiful.

I also like the use of multiple geometric patterns in the room below by designer Lori Dennis. The square pattern on the room screen, rectangular base on the coffee table, round shape of the suspended chair, and even the round base on the console table on the far wall all work together to create an interesting space.

All modern Graham & Brown Darcy Pearl Wallpaper by Graham & Brown $60“I love symmetry and balance — geometric patterns tend to exhibit these qualities,” Lori told The Design File. “In general, geometric designs are interesting, fun and can accommodate bright, bold colors.”

She suggests homeowners can bring the look into their own homes easily using ’60s-influenced wallpapers.

But you don’t have to go quite so strong to bring geometric patterns into your space.

Bhg subtle geometricsThe room at right from Better Homes and Gardens uses moldings on the wall to create beautiful geometric lines that give the room balance without being so bold.

There’s also a fantastic pattern on the mirrored console. Plus, see the subtle pattern in the art, the round plate on the console and even the piping on the chair that creates strong rectangular patterns.

Are you inspired now to add a little geometry into your space? The room at right shows how you can do it with some molding. But there are also plenty of products available to add a little pattern into your pad instantly.
