Ross Dress for Less Comes to St. Louis/$25 Giftcard Giveaway – CLOSED

If you love getting awesome, name-brand stuff at ridiculously low prices, then you need to visit a Ross Dress for Less store. And that visit got a whole lot easier for St. Louis-area residents last week (3/3/12) when the nation’s largest off-price apparel and home fashion chain made its debut in the area with two new locations in Chesterfield, Mo. and Fairview Heights, Ill.

I was among a lucky group of women who got invited to a special opening of the store and I left the place with a LOAD of great bargains. Here’s a list of my delightful finds, all for $134.19:

a name-brand (can’t say the brand) dress for me to wear to my Godson’s first communion
a boutique-quality sundress for my teen
two pairs of shoes (also name brand) for my 4-year-old
a name-brand summer top for me
a “sliders” burger basket for my grill
a “Live Laugh Love” wall decal for my family room
an 18×24 wooden framed mirror for my kitchen

As promised, I found the same brand names carried in department and specialty stores priced at 20 percent to 60 percent less at Ross. In fact, the above-mentioned dress would have cost me nearly “$130 at my favorite department store, and I got everything on that list for $134.

Ross Dress for Less stores — more than 1,000 nationwide — have been in business for 30 years and carry apparel, shoes and accessories for the whole family, as well as home fashions. It’s literally a treasure hunt shopping experience.

The Ross “strategy” is “no frills, big thrills.” And that holds true in the store — no fancy displays or staging of the merchandise but thrilling merchandise just the same. Despite the “no frills,” the store was super organized and easy to navigate, and the racks aren’t overstuffed like you find in some discount stores. Plus, the associates were helpful, efficient and informed, even on the first day the store was opened for business. I think that bodes well for the customer service going forward.

Free Chocolate Event for Moms at the Lodge of Des Peres

Dr. Diane Sanford, Ph.D. , is hosting a free event at the Lodge of Des Peres that involves eating chocolate and talking about the strategies to cope with the mental, emotional and physical challenges of motherhood. I personally owe Diane an enormous debt of gratitude because I heard her speak when I was four months pregnant with my second child. I had suffered from postpartum depression after the birth of my first child and was very worried about it happening again. Thanks to Diane, I prepared during my 2nd pregnancy and was able to ENJOY the weeks and months following the birth of my second.

The Healthy School Lunch Makeover

As a mom, you likely know what your child eats for breakfast and dinner, but what about lunch at school? Typically, kids get about 30 to 50 percent of their calories while at school. The good news is there are several changes happening in school cafeterias across the country this year to make lunch time nutritious and delicious for students.

This year, moms will be pleased to know that school cafeterias are serving more whole grains in unexpected places (like pizza), more fresh vegetables (especially nutrient-rich leafy greens and orange vegetables), lessening sodium content and offering great-tasting flavored milk with fewer calories and less added sugar than in the past.

As the beverage of choice among students, the change to flavored milk is an important one. On average, school chocolate milk is projected to have just 31 calories more than white milk and 38% less added sugar, the result of ongoing work by milk processors with local districts across the country over the last five years.

This school year when kids pick up a carton of flavored milk with their lunch, the majority will be less than 150 calories and will have all the same nine essential nutrients as white milk – including vitamin D, calcium and potassium, nutrients that the 2010 Dietary Guidelines for Americans say children need to consume more of.

As a registered dietitian, I know most kids ages nine and older are far from the recommended three servings of dairy a day, and it’s important to offer a variety of choices, both flavored and white milk, to ensure kids have more opportunities to get the nutrients found in milk, versus choosing drinks with no nutritional value.

The food choices kids make today can have a big influence in shaping their future. Providing wholesome, nutritious meals for students increases their ability to pay attention in class, provides energy for sports and exercise, and reduces the risk of health problems later in life. These nutrients are important for kids’ growth and development, and for many children, school meals may be the best source of real nutrition they get all day.

So remember, nutritious food doesn’t have to be boring! Low-fat chocolate milk strikes a great balance between good nutrition and good fun.

Diplaying Quilts as Artwork, Creating Heirlooms

I’ve shared with you that one of my prized possessions is a quilt made by Campus Quilts from the baby clothes of my three children. And now, Campus Quilts is in the process of creating another quilt for me that will honor my late father’s memory. I wrote about that here and I will enthusiastically share pictures as soon as it arrives.

My dilemma, however, has been how to display these treasures. I want everyone who enters my home to see them! Well, my problem was solved when I found Chuck Pederson and Generation to Generation Heirlooms. Chuck handcrafts a Website full of products that are certain to become family heirlooms, including children’s toys, quilt ladders and quilt racks. Here is the gorgeous 7.5-foot quilt ladder he made for me:

As you can see, I am proudly displaying my baby-clothes quilt on the rack and will soon be adding my father’s memorial quilt above that. It fits perfectly in the corner of my room, with an angled design at the top so it leans securely against the wall.

Chuck makes all of his products by hand with the utmost care and attention to detail. The solid construction of this quilt ladder is amazing, and the silky-smooth finish on it is absolutely beautiful. Due to the size of this ladder, Chuck constructs it to fold in the middle for shipping and some minor assembly is required when it arrives. Just so you know, I intended to add that project to my husband’s “honey do” list, but the instructions Chuck sent were so simple and easy to follow that I completed it all by myself using the tools he suggested: A screwdriver and wood glue. (He pre-drills the holes for the dowels, good man that he is).

Memorial Quilt to Honor my Father’s Memory

My father, Roger L. Melton, Jr., died on April 30, 2011. It was somewhat unexpected and it’s still hard. As I said in my eulogy to him, he was my hero. He retired after 30 years as police officer and had a decorated (and sometimes colorful) career in law enforcement. I learned just days before his death, but unfortunately after he had slipped into unconsciousness, that he single-handedly prevented a Polaris missile from hitting a Navy aircraft. You can read about it here.

Now I have memories, photographs, a few videos and some other items that remind me of my Dad. I have some old police uniform shirts, a few medals he received while in the Army, some of his favorite T-shirts and the Sergeant’s badge from his police hat. I thought about putting these things in a shadow box, but then I remembered what I did with the baby clothes from my three kids. Campus Quilts turned those items into an absolutely amazing quilt that I will cherish forever. Here is a picture:

Campus Quilts makes t-shirt quilts, but they also make beautiful quilts from baby outfits, sweatshirts, socks, hats, and any other memorable fabric. So I figured why couldn’t they make a Memorial Quilt using my Dad’s things. So I contacted them and they said they could do it — Army medals, badges, T-shirts and all. Their sewing expertise is unmatched.

Once again, they’ve sent me the kit that describes exactly how to organize and number your items (you get to choose the order of your squares) and provides colors from which to choose for the sashing (an optional border around all of your quilt squares) and backing (the fabric on the back of your quilt). Or, you can provide your own fabric, which I might do this time. I haven’t decided yet.

I’m getting my items organized and ready to ship back to Campus Quilt. I might even email them a photo or two which they can transfer onto a white T-shirt and turn into a quilt squre. I have images of his letter commendation regarding the missile incident and my favorite photgraph of him in uniform.

I know this quilt will be among my most cherished possessions when it’s finished and is the best way I can imagine to display the things about my Dad that make me proud. As we move through this first year of milestones without him, I know it will provide me with comfort. For that reason, I wanted to share this with my readers. I think a Memorial Quilt would make a great gift for anyone who has lost a loved one. What better way to tell a grieving friend or family member that you acknowledge their loss and want to help them celebrate the memories.

Now stay tuned because you KNOW I’ll be posting pictures of my Dad’s Memorial Quilt as soon as it arrives. (And I’m hoping to have a new quilt ladder upon which to display it and my baby clothes quilt, too).

How I’m Getting Uber-Organized — AboutOne!

Last month, I had to help my 15-year-old daughter gather information on all her activities, awards, work accolades and volunteer hours so she could fill out a National Honor Society application. That should’ve been stressful and taken us hours of digging through files and scrapbooks and certificates. It wasn’t and it didn’t.

My son is working toward becoming an Eagle Scout, and we have to keep track of all the nights he camps, and which of those are in a tent, and how far along he is on the Eagle-required merit badges, and how many non-Eagle merit badges he has, and how many hours of service he performs, etc. That should be complicated and overwhelming. But it’s not.

I am getting into the habit of journaling, and I like to journal whenever I think of it, sometimes with photos — like when I’m watching my 3-year-old swing at the park or when I visit my Dad in the hospital, etc. Using the same tool that I’m using to track my kids’ educational accomplishments, awards and extra-curriculars, I can journal from my phone, or from my laptop, or from a computer at the library. I can include pictures and I can then incorporate any or all of those memories and milestones and photos into a newsletter that I can mail to friends or family, or simply print for my own keeping.

What’s all this about? It’s AboutOne! I first wrote about AboutOne here when I started my subscription last fall. At that time, I was simply using it to start documenting my kids’ extracurricular activities and awards. But as the months have passed, I’ve come to use it more and more. Now, I access the site the site everyday.

AboutOne is a family management Web site that enables you to manage just about every aspect of your life in one place, including:

Education records, awards, grades and test scores, organized by grade level and school. This section lets you document things by typing in entries, attaching files or photos, and/or uploading scanned documents. I’ve scanned letters of commendation and uploaded pdf files and attached them to entries that document my daughter’s extra curricular activities, etc.
Medical/Health records and information including places to keep track of allergies, procedures, doctor’s appointments, illnesses, medicines, immunizations, and contact information for medical professionals. Like education, items can be uploaded and attached to entries. For example, I can document an immunization and date and any reactions that my child might have, and scan and upload her immunization record, allowing me access this record from any place where there’s a computer and Internet access).
Vehicle records, including date purchased and maintenance records.
Emergency contacts.
Home records, including everything related to a home purchase, maintenance and capital gains.
Volunteer Hours
Contacts, and you can upload your contacts from other programs such and your phone or email contacts.
Memories and milestones (which, as I said, can be typed in on the site or emailed form your phone or computer).

Here’s the amazing thing: Once you have entered information such as educational records and volunteer hours, you can generate reports from the information you’ve entered. So I can choose a time frame for my daughter — like her freshman and sophomore year for the NHS application — and print a report that includes everything she did, was honored for, accomplished, volunteered at, etc, for those two years. That made filling out her NHS application a snap!

I really, really love this site and I keep finding new uses for it. For example, a few weeks ago I stayed with a family member who is having some health issues and who lives out of town. It occurred to me while there to scan some documents related to his health issues and medications, including contact information for his physicians and neighbors who live nearby. Now, I can access from any computer these records in case of an emergency. And if this family member eventually needs my family to be more actively involved in his health care, we will have a place to store records and information that my husband can access from work, or I can access from my Smart phone, etc. It made me think that if siblings caring for aging parents live in different cities or part of the same city and share responsibilities for aging parents, this would be the perfect way for all of the to have access to records regarding medications, doctors, etc.

The memories and milestones part of the site is by far, my favorite. I find myself sending emails to the site from my phone all the time with just a few words or phrases. These emails arrive in my AboutOne Inbox and are waiting for me the next time I sign into the site. They act as writing prompts for me, helping me journal about our lives, and the site allows me to attach photos or documents to those memories. It’s so FUN!

Get Amber Alerts Via Text, Help Save Children

Jan. 13 was the 15^th anniversary of National AMBER Alert Awareness Day. In celebration, cellular companies across the country invited customers to sign up to receive free AMBER alerts via text message, and you can still do so.

Since its inception, the AMBER Alert program has led to the safe recovery of more than 500 children, according to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children.

Statistics show that the first three hours following abduction are the most critical to the search. In 2005, the Wireless AMBER Alerts Initiative enabled the public to receive alerts via text message on their wireless devices. Wireless AMBER Alerts have the potential to reach 96 percent of the public with more than 292 million cell phone subscribers in the United States.*

“Once customers sign up for this free service, AMBER Alerts are sent to their wireless devices, so they can be made aware of a missing child in their area immediately,” said Michelle Groves, director of sales for U.S. Cellular in the St. Louis region. “Signing up is quick, simple and may help in bringing home a lost or abducted child.”

To sign up for wireless AMBER Alerts, visit www.wirelessamberalerts.org or text the word “Amber” followed by a space and your 5-digit zip code to short code 26237. All cellular carriers participate in the program.

How wireless AMBER Alerts work:

Sign up to receive AMBER Alerts in your area by selecting the location(s) you frequent most, such as where you live and work.
Law enforcement issues an AMBER Alert and provides the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC) with the information to include in the alert.
NCMEC formats the AMBER Alert information, which is then relayed to the cellular companies.
This information is sent as a free text message.
Cell phone customers will only receive AMBER Alerts by enrolling in the program.
