First-aid Situation and Bandage Coupon

Last week, my poor baby cut her ankle open to the bone on a piece of glass from a broken bowl. It happened so fast, and it reminded me of the importance of having a well-stocked, easily accessible first-aid kit in your home (and I also suggest having one in all of your vehicles).

My teen is working as a life guard this summer, and she was home with me when the accident happened, immediately going into “first-aide/life guard mode.” While I wrapped my hand around my toddler’s ankle (not yet knowing the extent of the injury), got her on her back and lifted her foot in the air, my teen grabbed the first-aid kit, tore open a large gauze bandage, handed it to me, then grabbed a long piece of cloth that is actually a cooling cloth but that we used to secure the bandage around my baby’s ankle and slow the bleeding. Then we loaded her into the car and headed to the emergency room. Here is a picture of our “battle field” dressing.

Now here’s a picture of her injury. Don’t look if you’re squeamish.

She got stitches. It was all a little “traumatic” at first, but the E.R. at Missouri Baptist Medical Center is the BEST at handling kiddos, so we’re all good. And the stitches will come out before we leave for our Florida beach vacation, so that’s a relief.

But back to the first aide kit. My teen was a little critical of the contents of our kit, so I’m re-stocking. We had what we needed, but we did use our last bandage. McDonald’s Recalls Shrek Glasses

Oops. McDonald’s is having to recall those Shrek glasses they’ve been selling to promote the new movie because the designs have traces of cadmium. Apparently, they believe he glasses are probably safe for consumer use, but they’re being cautious. McDonald’s and the Consumer Product Safety Commission worked together on the recall decision. I was sent the CARES child airplane seat belt to review and let me tell you what a life saver it is! First of I mean that literally, your kids are much safer with this seat belt than just a lap belt alone. But secondly carrying this belt verses a large car seat is so much more convenient. We traveled with bug last thanksgiving and I wish I would have had this then. But since I didn’t, I learned how hard it can be to keep a toddler in their seat using just a lap belt. Don’t Count on the Luck of the Irish on St. Patrick’s Day

St. Patrick’s Day is right around the corner, and it’s not the luck of the Irish that will keep the roads safe . It’s planning now for a safe and sober way home.

Are you headed out with friends after work this Wednesday to celebrate the holiday? No? Well when you and your family are on the road headed to choir practice, a t-ball game, or coming home from school, you may be sharing the road with those returning from a fun St. Patrick’s Day event. It’s time to spread the word about the dangers of buzzed driving and to remind people that Buzzed Driving IS Drunk Driving, and the best way to stay safe is to plan ahead.

Let’s remind everyone about the importance of remembering to:

Designate a sober driver before you leave for your event.
Be ready to take alternate transportation such as a bus or taxi. Have the phone number of a taxi service stored in your phone before you leave for the party.

Even if you will not be celebrating this St. Patrick’s Day, keep in mind that in 2008, 1,179 people in other vehicles were killed in crashes involving alcohol-impaired drivers. And for those who don’t plan on over-indulging: a buzzed driving crash looks the same as a drunk driving crash.

I hadn’t heard of Britax carseats when my older children were babies, but thankfully learned about them with my third child. Britax car seats are expensive, and sales are hard to find, but let me tell you why I think they’re worth it. This car seat has one of the highest safety ratings, as well as a patented side-impact system. Plus, it has a cool,easy to use latch system that makes installation a “snap,”, a unique tether system that makes it seem more stable and secure and some very handy velcro strips that keep those pesky straps out of the way when you’re trying to put the child in the seat.

I paid $219 for my Britax when I bought it two years ago (one model is on sale at the Right Start for $199 starting today) , and I loved it so much that I bought one for my husband’s car a few months later. Here are some photos of one of my Britax car seats and the features I love:

The car seat is VERY easy to install because of its unique clip system. Plus, it has a tether that is attached to the top of the seat and clips into the hardware built into floor of your car or minivan, which stabilizes the seat in a way that I was NEVER able to achieve just using the lap belt on other car seat models. It is rather large, so I had to move the seat’s position in my old van to behind the passenger seat so that my husband could still drive without his knees being on the dash. But that was in my a Kia Sedona — we don’t have this issue in our Honda Odyssey.

This is the latch system I was talking about — you don’t have use the lap belt to install the seat because these latches clip right onto the hardware built into the seat of the car (assuming you have a model that wasn’t built in the 1980s.)

These are the helfpul velcro strips that keep the straps out of the way while you place the child in seat.

Here is the tether that attaches to the floor of the car or minivan, stabilizing the seat in both the rear and forward-facing position.

While you may not be thinking about the dangers of buzzed driving this time of year, you or someone you know will likely be attending a party where alcohol is served. So whether you’re rooting for the Colts or the Saints, there are some things you need to know to keep yourself and your loved ones safe before, during and after Super Bowl XLIV. When you’re heading out to a party or hosting guests, remember to always plan ahead:

Buzzed Driving IS Drunk Driving!

It’s holiday party season – time to celebrate all of the exciting winter holidays with our friends and loved ones. Our mailboxes are flooded with invitations to parties and dinners and other holiday get-togethers. With these parties come food, fellowship, gifts, and in many cases, festive alcoholic drinks.

In 2008, nearly 12,000 people in the United States were killed in alcohol-impaired driving crashes. During the periods around Christmas and New Year’s, this number was particularly high, with 316 people killed in alcohol-impaired driving crashes. In 2007, 162,493 women were arrested for a DUI, an increase of almost 29% since 1998. (Can you say Bunco? Girls’ Night Out? Cookie Exchanges? Ornament Exchanges? It seems the opportunities to gather and celebrate and drink are endless these days).

Buzzed driving IS drunk driving.

You can’t help but wonder if lives could have been saved if people thought twice before getting behind the wheel. Sometimes, just TWO drinks is enough to be “buzzed” and (I’ll say it again): BUZZED DRIVING IS DRUNK DRIVING.

With the holidays approaching, it’s important that drivers be reminded about the dangers of buzzed driving. Who knows…it could save a life.

Yesterday, I participated in a Twitter event for this campaign hosted by Resourceful Mommy and the Buzzed Driving/Ad Council, and learned some interesting things, such as:

In 2008, 16 percent of child traffic fatalities occurred in alcohol impaired driving crashes (remember, most children DON’T HAVE THE OPTION TO OPT OUT OF RIDING WITH AN IMPAIRED DRIVER, SO BE RESPONSIBLE).
140-plus people died last year during the Christmas season from alcohol-impaired driving.
173 people died last year during the New Year’s holiday period due to alcohol-impaired driving.
Drinking lots of water before drinking alcohol will NOT help you stay sober longer. (Neither will food or charcoal tablets). The best remedy is to NOT DRINK AND DRIVE.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHSTA) and the Ad Council are asking everyone to drive smart this holiday season and to pledge not to drive buzzed. I don’t drink, but I took the pledge anyway. You can take the pledge here, then tell your kids, friends and family that you did so and encourage them to do the same thing. It’s a great New Year’s Resolution that you can make early!

Keep Your Kids Safe While Traveling This Holiday Season

With the holiday season moving into full swing, families across the country are in the car and on the go. Whether you’re driving across the country to visit family or across town to holiday shop, it’s important that your child passengers are riding safely and that child safety seats are used correctly. AAA estimated that 30 million people travelled this Thanksgiving holiday alone and for many this is just the beginning of the holiday hustle and bustle.

Incredibly Affordable, Quality Booster Seat

If you’ve got a child in a booster seat, you probably know the hassles of making sure the booster seat is in the same car as the child who needs it. But who wants to buy several of these things?

Now there is a quality, lightweight booster seat available for $13.50. Harmony Juvenile recently introduced the LiteRider, and for less than $15, you can afford to have a booster seat in every car (and maybe an extra in the trunk in case you happen to pick up an extra kid here and there, as Moms are apt to do).

I’m currently using the Literider for my son, who is of a weight and stature that makes a booster seat necessary for his safety. He says it’s as comfortable as the other booster seat we have, which cost more than twice as much as the LiteRider.
