Giveaway: A chalkboard decal from The Design File

I love the way the designers and makers of decals have been so creative in coming up with new ideas for our homes. It’s why I just love the chalkboard decals. It’s a great way to introduce a fun and creative element into a kid’s room — or even a kitchen or office.

So I was thrilled when Paul David Wilson of Wilson Graphics offered to give away one of his chalkboard decals to a reader of The Design File (and, because I guest post here, a reader of Lipstick To Crayons).

He’s got some fun, practical decals — like this trio of round dots, which come as a set for $30. They look great in the office at right (the words have been printed on for effect but the circles will come blank).

There’s also the fancy chalkboard decal in the lower right corner of the collage. It can go on the refrigerator (as shown below) or on a wall, door or other location.

Then there are a ton of great options for kids — perfect for a bedroom, playroom or even a bathroom!

Above you can see the whale decal and at right you can see a few more of the 21 chalkboard decals in Paul’s shop on Etsy, an online marketplace for things handmade and vintage.

Honor party hosts with great gifts for the home

I was so fortunate last weekend to be one of the hosts of a baby shower for my good friends Dee & Jason, who are expecting their first little one. The party was a fantastic time.

I had so much fun choosing a cake and planning the table decorations, while my co-host Brook made some incredible cookies for favors (see at right).

But what I most wanted to share here was the incredible hostess gift that Dee found for us at Crate & Barrel.

I was stunned when I unwrapped these gorgeous Oslo Crystal Candleholders. The photo just doesn’t do these beauties justice. They are incredibly elegant and I can’t wait to use them as part of a centerpiece with my white and platinum china.

I’d also like to incorporate them into a winter-themed mantel decoration I’m working on, although I still haven’t quite figured that out.

Here’s the C&B description: Cubist candlelight in brilliant lead crystal with polished, beveled edges. Modern architectural candleholders in three sizes stand strong alone or cluster beautifully.

You can buy these as a set ($37) or individually (from $9.95 to $19.95).

Wherever I use these, they will be beautiful. Thanks to Deanna for a such wonderful gift.

I love discovering cute and unique toys or items for my kids — things that promise to stand the test of time and provide some simple entertainment. That’s why I was excited to land upon this darling quilted Crayon tote bag from the Etsy Store, A Quilt Dream.

My toddler seems to have a passion about “dawing” (drawing) and she is delighted to have her own little tote bag to carry her Crayons and a pad of paper or a coloring book. Plus, she enjoys slipping the Crayons in and out of their slots on the side of the bag as much as she enjoys scribbling all over the paper. It’s the perfect size for her, with two straps, a roomy middle and slots for 18 individual Crayons.

Raquel Phillips is the talented artist/quilter behind this Etsy shop. She is a stay-at-home Mom of two young children in Moncton, NB, Canada. Prior to life as a Mom, she was a teacher in Ontario where she taught Fashion Arts and Housing courses to high school students.

Raquel began making crayon bags and rolls after waiting with her kids for three hours in a doctor’s office with no toys. That night, she came up with the idea for the crayon bag.

All of Raquel’s products are made from quilt-shop fabrics and constructed to be beautiful AND durable. Her original Crayon bag underwent several revisions before becoming the quality product you see in her Etsy store today. In fact, all of her products are field-tested on her own kids and their friends.

Raquel arrived at Etsy via an article in her local paper and now she’s hooked. In addition to Crayon totes and Crayon rolles, she makes and sells hand-quilted and machine-quilted quilts, pin cushions, placemats, coasters, tea towels, chef hats and aprons.

I have to share with you an Etsy store on one of my favorite blogging friends. Lotta makes the most beautiful jewelry from vintage beads and buttons. I have one that I bought last year that I still wear on a regular basis. I get tons of compliments on it. Everyone wants to know where I got such a unique piece. I love that they are one-of-a-kind pieces.

Lotta has just posted some new rings and they will probably get snatched up pretty quick.

y eah baby! is another great Etsy website to check out! Peg is an incredible designer from my home state Iowa with some wonderful products for everyone to check out. From a variety of baby blankets and pillows to adorable children’s aprons, you will find something for anyone. From her Etsy profile she tells you about her passion for sewing.

“Hi everyone, I’m Peg. I have a background in computer programming and was previously a product manager for a software company. Life changes and now I have 3 children and fuel my creative passion by sewing.

My extremely talented mother (she made my wedding dress) taught me to sew many years ago. One of her lessons was to make it right the first time so all of my blankets and burp cloths are sewn inside-out, turned and top-stitched, and then a design stitched in the center to ensure the item holds its shape after repeated washings.”

One of the blankets I love is the Michael Miller Flannel Receiving Blanket! The colors are incredible and large enough for cuddle time with the older babies-and we know I love cuddle time with Miss Kelsie!” One side has the Cha Cha Watermelon Stripe while the reverse side has the beautiful Apple Dumb Dot pattern. I recently bought a car vinyl decal from Busy Mom Creations and I love it. I just put it on my car yesterday. It was very easy to install and it looks great.
