I made my Christmas cards this week on Snapfish. I know. It’s not even Halloween yet. But I was so excited about all the new designs and card-making features on Snapfish, and I wanted to get them done before a really fun Twitter party on Tuesday (details to follow — you gotta come) and I had some great pictures from our recent trip to Disney, and . . and . . . and . . . .

I must say that this is my best Christmas card EVER! The new Holiday Card Studio on Snapfish has more than 130 designers and more than 3,600 new designs to choose from, so it took me awhile to decide what design I wanted. First, you can begin the process by choosing your holiday (Christmas, Kwanzaa, Hanukkah), and then you can narrow your search by religion, number of photos you want on your card, landscape or portrait orientation, color, design preferences, etc.

I decided that I wanted to send a flat card with multiple photos, so that helped me narrow my search a little. Still, I scanned through pages of beautiful, unique designs that met my criterion (did I mention they have more than 3,600 new designs from which to choose)?

But the choices that I had didn’t stop with my card design. Once I picked the design, I was able to decide if I wanted glossy, matte or writable stationary paper. Choosing writable stationary paper meant that I could pick a different layout for the back of the card — including the layout that I chose for the back which let me put EIGHT additional photos on my card!! And here’s another really cool feature about the Holiday Card Studio: You can change your mind as you work and make adjustments to everything from the design to the layout on the back to the text size on the front, etc. The cards are completely customizable. You can even make cards with recorded messages! Here’s a picture of the front of my card as I was making it:

Another thing I loved about the card-making process was the ease with which I could add additional photos to my library for making the card. As I was working, I discovered that I didn’t have a good picture of my son in his Boy Scout uniform, and it was so easy for me to add that picture to my library with a couple of clicks.

FedEx Launches Design & Print Center

I remember the hassles of creating my first set of business cards when I started my freelance writing business in 1995 — there was NOTHING easy about it. But FedEx Office recently launched a new Design & Print Center and invited me to create business cards and cards for Lipstick to Crayons, and it was easy AND fun.

The new system lets you design and customize personal, professional or family stationery, calling cards, business cards, notecards, address labels and more in just minutes online or in stores around the country. I literally created my cards in less than 15 minutes using the custom business card option here. You can upload a picture or logo, or use one from their gallery, and the wizard walks you through the process step by step.

If you don’t want to think at all, you can use the templates here. They offer about 3,000 designs from which to choose.

As a freelance writer and communications consultant, I know the importance of distinguishing myself and having custom printed, professional materials. But I didn’t want to spend the money to have someone design a logo for me. The Fed Ex gallery of images offered me what I think is a perfect image for my cards. Check them out:

Additionally, for all you bloggers out there, products available through the Design & Print Center can help you build your blogging brand. For instance, you can put your blog’s logo on calling cards for networking events and conferences. Business cards start at just $29.99.

I’m one of those people who refers to paper towels as Scott towels. I honestly thought that’s what they were called until I got to Journalism School at Mizzou and learned via lost points on an editing class quiz that Scott is a name brand and is only one of many paper towel brands. That shows you how prevalent this particular brand was in my childhood home.

These days, however, Scott is hoping to make your life easier with more than just paper towels. In fact, the company has launched a Web site called Scott Common Sense Community that offers tips and information on lots of topics including cooking, organizing, cleaning, saving money, etc. Each month, the site has a focused theme, and this month that theme is “Change for the Better.” So, Scott is offering one my readers a $100 gift card to spend on ANYTHING to help implement changes she (or he) might be trying to make.

I played around on the Scott Common Sense Community for a little while before writing this post and I have to say that I think they’ve got the right idea. A lot of companies are trying to build Web sites that engage their customers in an effort to build relationships and brand loyalty. It’s a great idea and one that can really work if a company is willing to spend the time (and resources) to provide value-added content. Scott seems to be doing just that. Check out the articles and tips on organization, for example. There are some great tips here.

tiny*prints first communion invite review

Ten years ago when I had my Ten years ago when I had my first baby I set out to be the perfect mother or at least appear to be. I laugh about it now that I have four kids and realize that being a good enough mother is good enough. I honestly thought that assembling elaborate memory books for my daughter and sending out professionally photographed Christmas cards meant I loved my child more than a mother who couldn’t make the time for scrapbooking or mailed store bought cards.

You would have hated me. As well you should.

Thankfully I got a clue by the time I was pregnant with my third but there was a price to pay for my perfect mom facade. Family and friends had come to expect my fancy and unique invitations and holiday cards. My least favorite sister in law actually told me once that she was disappointed that I sent out evites for a 4th of July BBQ.

Sending out professional cards is the only part of my perfect mom charade that I’ve kept up with so I have become quite the expert on stationery, announcements, and invitations. I know what companies have the best customer service and use the nicest card stock and I’m always looking for companies that offer unique designs to insure that my announcement or invitation will be a one-of-a-kind.

Recently Parent Bloggers Network gave me the opportunity to review tiny*prints and their invitations for my daughter’s first holy communion.

I was immediately impressed with how many design choices they offered. When I ordered invitations from another company a few years ago for my oldest daughter’s communion I had very limited choices and none offered the option to add a photo.

I let my daughter choose her favorite design which included the option to add a photo. The ordering process was very easy to follow with lots of options for customizing. I added my text and was given the option to change the font and size along with two color choices. A helpful tips box pops up with a link to suggested verses and frequently asked questions. Uploading the photo was easy and I was able to view a preview of the invitation before choosing to save. According to their helpful tips box:

A professional designer will review your text and may make punctuation, abbreviation or layout modifications for best appearance.
A professional designer will review and enhance your photo(s) for best quality printing.
A customer service specialist will contact you if there are any problems with your text.

I liked the reassurance that someone would be proofing what I did and contacting me if they felt something needed improvement.

The next screen gave me the option to add my return address to the envelopes for $0.50 which I opted out. I have personalized address labels that I used instead. For a $15 charge I could have a digital proof emailed but I was under a time crunch and was happy with how the invitation looked online. I did pay $30 for the next day air saver shipping since the processing and shipping time had the invitations arriving a few days before my event. I highly recommend ordering at least three weeks before your event to avoid this extra fee.

The invitations arrived nicely packaged within Tiny Prints estimated arrival date. The quality of the card stock and ink is superb. The invite looked just as it had online, a professional look and feel that will keep me in high standing with my friends and family who expect only the best from any invitation or announcement I mail. I received many compliments on the invitation and some even wanted to know what photographer I used. Little did they know I shot the photo in my backyard then converted it to black and white.

I give tiny*prints a two thumbs up. The website is easy to navigate as well is the ordering process. With their wide selection of cards for just about any occasion you are sure to find the perfect card that will leave a lasting impression. ~Kristie
